  • Math Mammoth Grade 4-B Worktext

    Dr Maria Miller

Paperback (Math Mammoth, Jan. 7, 2018)
Math Mammoth Grade 4-B worktext is the student book for the latter half of grade 4 mathematics studies. This is the full color version. Being a worktext means that the book contains both the instruction and all the exercises and problems. In this book, Math Mammoth Grade 4-B, we first study division. The focus is on learning long division, using division in word problems, and studying factors and divisibility. In the chapter on geometry, we first review area and perimeter, and then concentrate on the topic of angles. Students measure and draw angles, solve simple unknown angle problems, and classify triangles according to their angles. They also study parallel and perpendicular lines.Fractions and decimals are presented last. These two chapters teach and practice only some of the operations with fractions and decimals. The focus is still on building conceptual understanding of these concepts as a foundation towards 5th grade, when fraction and decimal arithmetic will be in focus.

  • True Ghost Stories: Tales of the Natural, Supernatural, and Just Plain Weird

    D. Miller

    language (, Sept. 27, 2015)
By the time he was five, Derrick knew there was something different about his life. His home, for example, gave off some special energy that he clearly felt. His mother explains to Derrick and his siblings that her unusual visitors and older relatives are familiar with the history of his house. Even though he lives in a center city neighborhood, nature seems to intervene on a regular basis.Derrick later realizes that this phenomenon is not exclusive to one particular area; both nature and the supernatural seem to follow him wherever he goes.In his adult life Derrick has physical encounters with a Wicca practitioner, different species of vermin, animals, a haunted woman, and an evil train. After Derrick purchases the building and medical practice of his brother, certain odd things begin to occur. He learns about Dr. Schadt, the prior physician who is now deceased, then Myra, the haunted woman, is led to Derrick under mysterious circumstances. Her presence in the building has escalated Dr. Schadt's activities especially after Myra's disastrous séance. His antics end up creating concern for their safety. The author attempts to show how the negative entity is entwined in the daily routine of the building. Certain factors are discussed for the reader to surmise their own opinion as to why these true events unfolded. This book is a collection of true tales that happened to the author, his family, friends, and loved ones…. So far.

  • Math Mammoth Grade 6-B Worktext

    Dr Maria Miller

Paperback (Math Mammoth, Jan. 10, 2018)
Math Mammoth Grade 6-B Worktext is the second student book in Math Mammoth grade 6 curriculum, meant for the latter half of 6th grade. It covers using factoring to help to calculate the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM); addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions; integers (negative numbers) and graphing in the coordinate plane; finding the area of polygons; and statistical distributions.Chapter 6 first reviews prime factorization and then teaches students two new concepts: the greatest common factor and the least common multiple. We also apply those concepts factor to simplify fractions and to find common denominators for adding fractions. In Chapter 7, students first review addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions from fifth grade. Then we focus on a new topic: the division of fractions. The chapter also includes ample practice in solving problems with fractions.Chapter 8 introduces students to integers (signed numbers). They plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane, reflect and translate simple figures, and learn to add and subtract with negative numbers. (Multiplication and division of integers will be studied in 7th grade.)The next chapter, Geometry, focuses on calculating the area of polygons. After a brief review of terminology for triangles and quadrilaterals and drawing fundamentals, this new topic is presented simply in a logical progression: first, the area of a right triangle; next, the area of a parallelogram; then, the area of any triangle; and finally, the area of a polygon. After that, students learn how to use nets of simple solids to calculate their surface area. Lastly, we turn to the concept of volume. Students have already learned to find the volumes of rectangular prisms in 5th grade. Now they calculate the volumes of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths. The final chapter is about statistics. Beginning with the concept of a statistical distribution, students learn about measures of center and measures of variability. They also learn how to make dot plots, histograms, boxplots, and stem-and-leaf plots as ways to summarize and analyze distributions.Features Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so your children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it. Concepts are often explained with visual models, followed by exercises using those models. These visual models can take the place of manipulatives for many children; however, it is very easy to add corresponding manipulatives to the lessons if so desired. The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much. Very little teacher preparation is required. The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext, and there also exist accompanying videos where you can see Maria herself teach the material. After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice. This is the full-color version of the worktext. Please note that it does not include the answers; they are sold as a separate book.

  • Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext

    Dr Maria Miller

Paperback (Math Mammoth, Jan. 7, 2018)
Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext is the student worktext for second half of 5th grade mathematics studies. This book is the full-color version.Fifth grade focuses on fractions and decimals, in particular. In part 5-A, students have studied the four operations with whole numbers, large numbers, problem solving, and decimal arithmetic. In this part, 5-B, we study common statistical graphs, fraction arithmetic, and geometry. This book starts with chapter 5, where we study graphing in a coordinate grid, line and bar graphs, and average and mode. Today's world has become increasingly complex with lots of data presented in the media, so our children need a good grasp of statistical graphs to be able to make sense of all of that information.Chapter 6 covers the addition and subtraction of fractions--another topic of focus for 5th grade, besides decimals. The most difficult topic of this chapter is adding and subtracting unlike fractions, which is done by first converting them to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. In chapter 7, we study the multiplication and division of fractions (division only in special cases), relying first on visual models, and then proceeding to the abstract shortcuts.Chapter 8 takes us to geometry, starting with a review of angles and polygons. From there, students will learn to draw circles, to classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and the concept of volume in the context of right rectangular prisms (boxes).
